Sequim Man Arrested for Reckless Burning

On Sunday, July 29th, 2018, at 7:32 p.m., Officers of the Sequim Police Department responded to a call for assistance for Clallam County Fire District 3 in the area of 400 South Brown Road in Sequim. Fire department personnel were extinguishing several small fires in the field to the south of that location.

While doing so, fire personnel observed a suspicious subject in the area and believed him to be responsible for starting the fires. The subject attempted to leave the area and was hiding from law enforcement. Clallam County Sheriff’s Department deputies were called to assist in searching for the subject.

The subject was located after a lengthy search and was identified as Sequim resident Michael Heller. He was hiding behind a storage container to the south of the Shipley Center on East Hammond Street and was subsequently arrested for reckless burning.

While in the process of affecting the arrest, three Sequim officers were assaulted by Heller. Neither the officers nor Heller sustained injury during the incident.

Heller was incarcerated into the Clallam County Corrections Facility and booked under charges of Reckless Burning 2nd Degree, Assault 3rd Degree (three counts) and Resisting Arrest.
