The Sequim Police Department has received two recent reports of the theft of copper wire resulting in thousands of dollars in loss and repair. One theft was from a building that was under construction, the other was from live light posts along Bell St. in Sequim. In this case the thief was fortunate to not have been electrocuted.
Sequim Police have increased patrols in these areas and encourage construction businesses to take measures to secure job sites and lock up tools and supplies. Copper thefts are often associated with persons involved with narcotics use and they will sell the copper to recycling centers to fund their addiction.
If you see suspicious persons and/or vehicles not associated with businesses or marked with City of Sequim insignia around construction sites or City equipment, especially after business hours, please contact the Sequim Police Department at (360) 683-7227 at that time so officers can confirm those persons are there for legitimate business reasons.
