The City of Sequim Public Works Department announces the upcoming completion of two large road improvement projects.
North 7th AvenueWork is expected to be completed on North 7th Avenue no later than the week of November 12, 2012. The project includes the reconstruction and asphalt overlay of N. 7th Avenue between Washington Street and Fir Street. The project also includes the addition of striping for bicycle lanes on the road.
South Sequim Avenue and the intersection of Sequim Avenue and Washington StreetThe majority of the work on South Sequim Avenue and through the Sequim Avenue and Washington Street intersection is scheduled to be completed the week of November 12, 2012, with the exception of installing the decorative crosswalks through the intersection. The crosswalks should be completed by the end of November. The project has included upgrading several aging water lines and an asphalt overlay.
The project also includes an upgrade to the traffic detection system in the intersection. The traffic sensor loops under the pavement have been replaced by a video traffic detection system. The video cameras sense traffic through the intersection to ensure the most efficient movement of traffic. All of the video is real time, and nothing is recorded, nor are the cameras capable of detecting speed.
Advantages to using a video traffic detection system are increased reliability with less opportunity for damage to the equipment. The cameras are more flexible and can be redirected if an intersection changes. They are more sensitive and will register all vehicles, where traffic sensor loops can sometimes miss lighter vehicles. The cameras will also provide exact traffic counts which will assist in future planning.
