Monday, October 23, the City of Sequim will begin replacement of a water main and sewer main on North and South Sunnyside Avenue from Maple Street to East Fir Street.
The project includes replacing and upsizing an existing 6-inch diameter asbestos cement water main, near the end of its service life, with a new 8” polyvinylchloride (PVC) main. It also will replace and upsize a 12-inch concrete sewer main to an 18-inch PVC main to increase collection capacity to accommodate the Carlsborg sewer connection and future growth. The project will then upgrade curb ramps on South Sunnyside Avenue to meet Federal accessibility requirements and will overlay Sunnyside Avenue from Maple Street to East Fir Street.
Work for the project will be constructed in three phases. Phase One will be underground utility work and roadway paving on Sunnyside Avenue between East Fir St and the Washington Street intersection. Phase One will begin construction on October 23 and will be completed by the end of 2017. Work for Phase One will be completed during the day between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Drivers can expect temporary roadway closures and lane closures. The road will remain open to residents living adjacent to the project work zone.
Phase Two will be underground utility work constructed in the Sunnyside/Washington Street intersection and will be constructed from mid-January through February 2018. Work for Phase Two will be completed at night between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Drivers can expect temporary closure of Washington Street at the Sunnyside intersection. Detours will be in place to help navigate drivers around the work zone.
Phase Three will include underground utility work, sidewalk and curb ramp improvements, and final paving from Washington Street to Maple Street and will be constructed between February
and April, 2018. Underground utility work for Phase Three will be completed at night between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Drivers can expect temporary closures of South Sunnyside. Detours will be in place to help navigate drivers around the work zone. Sidewalk and paving work will occur during the day between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Drivers can expect temporary lane closures and short delays lasting 5 to 10 minutes.
While the project includes provisions for wet and cold weather construction, the schedule may still be impacted by weather, resulting in a schedule change or work suspension.
This project will be funded in part by the Washington State Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF) program and in part by the Washington State Department of Ecology, Water Pollution Control State Revolving Fund (CWSRF) program, with federal funds from the Environmental Protection Agency. City utility funds and Clallam County funds as part of the Carlsborg sewer contribution will also be utilized.
The work will be conducted by Jordan Excavating of Port Angeles, Washington.
