Posted on: July 19, 2018[ARCHIVED] City of Sequim to Begin City-Wide Chip Seal Project
Monday, July 23, the City of Sequim will begin its City Wide Chip Seal project funded by the Transportation Benefit District (TBD). Work will continue through Saturday, July 28.
Work for the project will occur in three distinct areas of the City. The first area is in Northeast Sequim, bordered by East Fir Street in on the north, North Brown Road on the east, East Washington Street on the south, and North Sunnyside Avenue on the west. A second segment of road way to be chip sealed runs from East Silberhorn Road near its intersection with Quiet Place eastward to South 7th Avenue and then northward on South 7th Avenue to McCurdy Road just south of the US 101. The third segment of road is South River Road from the US 101 Interchange southward to a point north of Lorraine Drive.
All work will be completed during the daylight hours of 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. Drivers can expect temporary roadway closures, lane closures and pilot cars. The road will remain open to residents living adjacent to the project work zone. Chip seal work is dependent upon good weather conditions, so this schedule is subject to change.
Chip Seal work, consists of street cleaning, asphalt oil application, a thin layer of aggregate, rolling, more sweeping and a “fog seal” coat of asphalt oil which results in a refurbished street with an extended life of 7 to 10 years. Chip seal work is an economical and expedient means of extending the life of a street and enhancing its drive quality, without having to perform a costly and time consuming full structural roadway rehabilitation.
Roads are typically drivable within 24 hours of being chip sealed. However, it is important for drivers to refrain from sudden starts or stops, or speeding, within the first two weeks to allow the chip seal to set properly.
The work will be conducted by Sierra Santa Fe Corporation of Ridgefield, Washington.
