Representatives from the City of Sequim have been selected to present “Power to the People, Right On! Participatory Budgeting through the People’s Project – Your Money – Your Power – Your Project” at the Alliance for Innovation’s Transforming Local Government Conference on May 6 in Phoenix, Arizona. Speaker selection is a competitive process. The conference received 108 presentation proposals and selected 60 for some level of presentation. Sequim will conduct a full hour presentation session.
The presentation will be given by Administrative Services Director Sue Hagener and Communications and Marketing Director Barbara Hanna and will discuss how the small city of Sequim took the global initiative of participatory budgeting and customized it to work for our community.
The People’s Project! – Your Money – Your Power – Your Project - was introduced in 2019 and gave the public the opportunity to vote on how they would spend up to $150,000 in the 2020 budget. The community chose adding nine water filling stations in City parks. The water filling stations will be implemented in spring 2020. The City will also pilot the peoples’ second choice by installing four Big Belly Automated Trash & Recycling Stations.
The City of Sequim is now reviewing input from the community for projects to be included in the People’s Project voting for the 2021 budget. Voting will take place in May during the Sequim Irrigation Festival.
